Software mirror in Europe
« on: September 03, 2013, 07:31:48 AM »
Hello all,

I would like to suggest to have a software mirror in Europe if possible. For example at the RWTH Aachen or so. At least for me the downloads from Oregon are quite slow. As I usually update at least once per week (or at whatever frequency updates are released) it'd be nice to have a fast download of all relevant packages.

Would that be possible / an option?

Cheers
Philipp

Hi Philipp,
My download tests for the Network Solutions downloads are as follows:

ProbeForEPMA.msi using Help | Update Probe for EPMA dialog (alternative ftp) : 4 min 50 sec
ProbeForEPMA.msi using IE browser (http://www.probesoftware.com/Update.htm) : 4 min 15 sec

Have you tried downloading from there? Network Solutions should have a mirror in Europe.

Hi all,

I would love to give you numbers for that, but I cannot use the help menu, because I go through a proxy server that requires authentication.

For http://probesoftware.com/ftp/ProbeForEPMA.msi it took me today around 11 am MESZ  23 minutes. For comparison, a file of the same size took 4 minutes from the RWTH Aachen.

Cheers

I just had time to do the default ftp download in PFE, which took 37 minutes. Not sure how useful that is without the other servers in comparison. Location: Tasmania.

Karsten,
Please try the "alternative ftp" download option (the 3rd one). That is Network Solutions and they should have a closer mirror to you, which should speed things up considerably.

Please report this result. Perhaps we should make this option the default, if it is significantly faster...

I just tried using the "Alternative FTP" which took 17 minutes to Tasmania, so it was more than twice as fast as the normal FTP (37 minutes). On different days though.

Cheers,

Karsten

Is there a link to to the "alternative ftp"? I would like to use it too, but need a different client for proxy issues. What is the URL for the "alternative" ftp?

Thanks
Philipp

Probably best if you just use your browser and connect to:

Ok, today (9 MESZ) I used the download from Network Solutions (the fast one with mirror somewhere) http://www.probesoftware.com/ftp/ProbeForEPMA.msi took 10 minutes. That is amost twice as fast as in Reply #3 (17 mins). It seems download speeds are changing from time to time.

For comparison: The test file from RWTH Aachen loaded again in 5 Mins today.

Cheers
