Improved Periodic Tables
« on: May 20, 2015, 11:40:38 AM »
As many of you know we make extensive use of Golden Software's Grapher and Surfer graphics software applications for our own presentation output and automated scripting.

Here is an short article on a new interactive periodic table produced for IUPAC utilizing Grapher:

http://www.goldensoftware.com/Newsletter/new-periodic-table-of-the-isotopes

An article discussing the project is here:

http://www.iupac.org/nc/home/projects/project-db/project-details.html?tx_wfqbe_pi1%5bproject_nr%5d=2007-038-3-200

Very nice! I may get one for the lab!
The only stupid question is the one not asked!

If anyone needs a PDF periodic table for printing, I wrote an online tool a while ago that may be of some use:

http://norris.org.au/expet/ptab/

There are plenty of configuration options, custom data can also be added, and the general idea was for something clean, simple, and well-suited for printing at any size for use in the lab.

EMAS do a really nice period table - Mike Matthews was involved with which has a lot of usually information for EPMA - Ka,Kb,La,Lb,Ma,Mb energies plus a plot showing which crystal e.g. TAP, PET etc for which x-ray energy, but I can't find the link

Not sure what the link is either but I have a copy of the EMAS periodic table. Attached to the post. Enjoy, it is excellent and worthwhile to print for the lab.

That is a nice table.  Here are two that Ash made for me a number of years ago (see attached- you must be logged in to see attachments).

The first is a generic Sx100 table and the second is a "custom" one for the crystals that are actually on my instrument.

Hi,

I was thinking about how to display a wavelength chart. The performance of a spectrometer depends on whether you're at the top or the bottom of the spectrometer, so I came up with this - but it's a bit crazy.

This is actually really nice.

Of course "performance" could mean high spectral resolution at the top of the spectrometer range, or high count rate at the bottom of the spectrometer range.

Now do another one for Cameca instruments please!    :)

The EMAS periodic table can be found on the EMAS home page (www.microbeamanalysis.eu) in the bottom right corner.

I’ve been thinking about an electronic version for a while, where the user can select whether it displays energy, wavelength (does anyone actually use wavelength?), Cameca or JEOL units, or absorption edges instead of emission energies. Does anyone who knows how to write apps fancy helping?

Here's the latest version - a chart of wavelength vs energy

Hi Ben,
Can you make a Cameca version with a sin theta (x10^5) Y axis?

I'd like to print it large and put it on the lab wall.

Hi John,

Yes will do, when I have a bit a time. Could even have a combined JEOL-CAMECA one - with 2 Y axes.
