Electron Microprobe Operator/ Laboratory Manager
University of Oklahoma

The Office of the Vice President of Research supports an electron microanalysis laboratory built around a Cameca SX100 microprobe as a core research facility of the University (https://ors.ou.edu/Microprobe/OUEMPLHome.html). This includes a fully funded, twelve-month annual staff position as Electron Microprobe Operator/Laboratory Manager. The staff appointment level is Research Scientist II with a starting salary of $55K-$60K. This position is open until filled.

Duties include daily operation of the microprobe and sample preparation for all clients, daily lab maintenance, periodic instrument maintenance (filament, roughing vacuum, etc.), coordinating major service with Cameca engineers, scheduling and bookkeeping of usage by clients, billing and payments, and an annual summary report of laboratory activity. The appointment permits the operator to utilize the electron microprobe for research and personal use. Adjunct professor status and teaching opportunities in the School of Geology & Geophysics are possible for individuals who hold a Ph.D.

Qualifications for the position include (1) a Master's or Ph.D. degree in geosciences or a relevant discipline, (2) experience with designing analytical procedures for quantitative EMPA, (3) knowledge of the chemistry of major and minor elements in the common rock-forming minerals, and (4) experience with EMP operation including basic maintenance. Applicants must submit (1) a cover letter that includes career goals and prior experience in electron microprobe analysis, (2) a CV that includes employment history and responsibilities, (3) transcripts of baccalaureate and master's degree courses, and (4) two letters of recommendation from individuals who are qualified to comment on the suitability of the applicant for the position. Job Summary:
The Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is appointing a person to manage three highly sophisticated laboratories: electron-probe microanalyzer, scanning electron microscope with energy dispersion X-ray spectrometer and image analysis system, and two X-ray powder diffractometers. The facility serves science and engineering departments on the UBC campus, as well as, students and faculty from several western Canadian universities, and clients from government labs and industry. The manager has the scientific expertise and management skills to: i) manage the overall operations of the labs, ii) directly supervise a Ph.D. level researcher, two M.Sc., and one B.Sc. level Research Assistants who perform the day-to-day work, iii) educate, advise and supervise the diverse users and clients of the laboratories, and to iv) perform independent research and accountable for the integrity of the data.

Organization Status:
The manager operates independently. As a professional scientist and an expert in the fields of electron-beam microanalysis, X-ray crystallography, and mineral and material  sciences, the manager develops administrative and scientific policy as appropriate to meet the needs of researchers and other clients.  The manager works closely with faculty members, supervises research scientists, advises users of the facility, and participates in the education of graduate students. This position reports to the Head of the Department and consults with the Director of Resources and Operations on administrative matters such as working conditions, contracts, billings, etc.

Work Performed:
a)   Manages the operations of the three major laboratories and the analytical work of faculty, research associates, post-doctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students.  Instructs and supervises users of the facilities including system training, analytical techniques, and calibration methods to be used. Ensures quality control for accurate quantification of a wide diversity of methods.  Prepares written and verbal technical materials for instruction purposes.  Ensures appropriate safety training is given and procedures followed by users in the lab.
b)   The leadership and management of the facilities are solely the responsibility of the manager.  The manager is a professional scientist and assumes leadership of both research work done, and how the various commercial operations of the facility are directed.  The manager determines management style, how staff is utilized, and is responsible for financial decisions concerning purchasing equipment subject to compliance with UBC practices and with approval of the Head of Department.
c)   The manager is responsible for maintaining operational continuity of the instruments through maintenance and repair of instruments, instrument servicing, and vendor communication. The manager ensures that funds are available for instrument maintenance and repair from the fees collected from users and clients.
d)   Operates the complex of laboratories on a cost-recovery basis, administers for-profit operation of the laboratories for clients from other universities, industry and government agencies. Recovers salary and benefits to support a full-time Ph.D.-level researcher and 3 other research assistants responsible for doing contract work and from client fees. Manages an average annual gross income from user fees for the complex of between $170,000 and $600,000. Orders all equipment and supplies for facilities, has signing authority on all related research accounts, invoices academic, government and industry clients for user fees and reconciles facility accounts on a monthly basis.
e)   Shares advanced microbeam and diffraction techniques with graduate students both within the department and from other departments to provide knowledge and skills to carry out independent research in support of their research.
f)   Develops analytical methods based on current scientific advances to complement the needs of individual users and supervises interpretation of results. Provides strategic direction in securing new technology and instrumentation. Monitors instrument performance and adjustment of operating parameters to achieve optimum performance for specific analyses.  Purchases and tests new instruments, accessories and software and verifies their performance.
g)   Long-range planning for the facilities is solely the responsibility of the manager in consultation with EOAS research faculty. In this regard, the manager keeps up-to-date with both the scientific and technological aspects of the facilities and organizes funding through various granting agencies and whatever other sources become available. Applies independently and collaboratively for funds to support their research and to purchase new equipment.

Supervision Received:
The manager works independently and establishes priorities taking into account the goals and needs of UBC researchers and other clients. Advises the best methods for achieving these goals by applying the appropriate scientific principles.  The manager makes his/her own decisions on both scientific and technical aspects of the work and is responsible for monitoring use of funds and resources. The manager's work is reviewed annually by department head and advisory council of facility-users.

Supervision Given:
Trains and supervises all users of electron-probe microanalyzer, scanning electron microscope with energy dispersion X-ray spectrometer and image analysis system, and X-ray powder diffractometers. Oversees operations of three laboratories and, annually, provides supervision to as many as 150 faculty, research associates, post-doctoral fellows, undergraduate and graduate students, and clients from industry and government. Manages a Ph.D.-level researcher and two M.Sc.-/B.Sc.-level Research Assistants who are responsible for doing contract work, certain laboratory maintenance, and also participates in the training of the various clientele. From time to time, additional part-time employees are supervised.

Consequence of Error/Judgement:
The manager is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the facility and its instruments and for the quality of analytical work. Errors in analyses and/or poor supervision would lead to incorrect interpretation of research results and prevent the attainment of research goals.  Such errors would result in the loss of incalculable time and resources on behalf of the researchers.

Inefficient management of laboratory facilities and instruments would result in downtime that delays research, damage to very expensive instruments, and the inability to recover the cost of operations from user fees.
Issues such as these and others would be addressed by the head of department in consultation with the advisory council of facility-users.

Qualifications:
Post-graduate degree or equivalent professional designation if responsible for a research project or Undergraduate degree if not responsible for a research project.  Ph.D. degree in geosciences or other relevant disciplines and demonstrated productivity in the appropriate fields, or an M.Sc. degree combined with extensive experience pertinent to the position.  7 years relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience if not responsible for a research project. 5 years experience in a field of specialization or equivalent combination of education and experience if responsible for a research project.  Must have experience in the operation of EPMA, XRD, SEM, including basic maintenance.

Must have proficiency in designing analytical procedures for quantitative EMPA.

Experience in teaching post secondary level courses.

Expertise in the acquisition of high quality chemical analyses, the development of new analytical procedures.

Experience in teaching and supervision of students, faculty and visiting scientists.

A demonstrated record of peer-review publication and successful grantsmanship.  Ability to explain, assign, and monitor work. Ability to identify, obtain, and effectively manage organizational resources (e.g., people, materials, assets, budgets). Ability to identify key results from scientific research findings.

This DOE lab is sort of in "our backyard" as the National Energy Technology Laboratory in Albany is only 40 minutes away from Eugene, and I just wanted to mention that last year NETL purchased, and I personally installed Probe for EPMA (and Probe Image) on their new JEOL 8530 instrument, so if any of you are thinking of applying for the job there, it already has the best EPMA software in the world running on it!    :D

And also Owen Neil will be training Brian Joy on Probe for EPMA and Probe Image on his JEOL 8530 at Queens University (Canada) in a couple of weeks (Brian in such a smart guy that he already has our software installed, configured and communicating with the instrument!). In fact he already obtained a quant analysis using the software!

I told him he'd better slow down or Owen will have nothing left to show him!  ;)

Position Summary:
The Virginia Tech Department of Geosciences invites applications for a Research Associate position managing its electron microprobe (EMPA) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) facilities, with employment commencing in spring or summer of 2019. The candidate will be responsible for day-to-day operation and maintenance of our Cameca SX-50 microprobe and ancillary infrastructure, two scanning electron microscopes (SEMs), and potentially a X-ray fluorescence (XRF) facility. Additionally, the candidate will be heavily involved in the acquisition of new instrumentation as required.

Specific duties will include:
  • Training of students, faculty and industry partners to obtain high quality analyses.
  • Acquisition of data for occasional users and industry partners.
  • Data processing and management.
  • Documentation and development of methodologies and protocols for optimal analysis of a wide range of natural and synthetic materials.
  • Day-to-day upkeep of instruments and coordination of longer-term maintenance schedules with instrument manufacturers.
  • Utilizing and maintaining sample preparation facilities (e.g. polishers and sample coaters).
  • All scheduling and accounting associated with these instruments.
  • Purchasing of lab supplies and instrument parts and hardware.
  • Working with stakeholders to assist in acquisition of new instrumentation and be involved in testing, benchmarking and evaluation of possible new purchases.
  • Development of best-practice protocols for analysis near detection limits of existing and potential new instruments.
Required Qualifications:       
  • A master’s or higher degree in a field that requires chemical characterization of natural materials, or extensive work experience in such a field.
  • Experience in analysis with either JEOL or Cameca electron microprobes.
  • Ability to work as a positive team member with people with diverse educational, technological, language and cultural backgrounds.
  • Legally eligible to work in the U.S.
Preferred Qualifications:       
  • Experience of maintenance of JEOL or Cameca electron microprobes or of instrumentation such as secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) or transmitted electron microscopy (TEM).
  • Working knowledge and experience in electronic and vacuum systems.
  • Working knowledge of the UNIX operating system.
  • Experience in teaching at college level or in training users in the acquisition of chemical data.

Electron Microbeam Facility: Research Associate

The Electron Microbeam facility in the Jackson School of Geosciences (https://www.jsg.utexas.edu/microbeam/) is seeking a highly qualified researcher to operate Electron Microbeam (EPMA) JEOL JXA-8200, Environmental, Scanning Electron Microprobe (ESEM) Phillips/FEI XL30 with Electron Backscattered, Diffraction Detector (EBSD), SEM JEOL JSM-6490LV, and X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD), Bruker D8 Advance.

The vision of the facility is to develop leading capabilities of electron microbeam instrumentation to allow researchers in the Jackson School of Geosciences, The University of Texas at Austin, and those in the south-central region of the United States to conduct a broad range of high impact, Discovery-class science.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. degree in chemistry, materials science, geosciences or related areas, and have a strong background in electron microbeam methods. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. Successful applicants must be reliable, quick-learning, highly organized, self-motivated, detail-oriented, and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The ability to work independently and in a team environment is important. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to delivering excellence in a timely manner and work well under pressure.

Familiarity with geological applicants of electron microscopy, XRD, and/or EBSD is preferred.

Applicants must demonstrate superior oral and written communication skills and will be expected to raise 25% of their salary support through externally funded projects.

Responsibilities include: maintaining all existing microbeam instrumentation, training and assisting users, developing and improving analytical protocols, teaching short courses and workshops, planning lab improvements, managing the operating account for the lab, and conducting independent research.

One fully funded 4-year PhD position supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation is available at the Institute of Geochemistry and Petrology of the ETH Zürich (Switzerland). This project will involve a large amount of microprobe and SEM analysis, and the candidate will at the end become an expert in REE-analysis and on the use of Probe for EPMA :)

The candidate should have a strong interest in magmatic petrology, mineralogy, and field work. Knowledge of one or more of the following techniques will be an advantage (in order of importance): EPMA, SEM, LA-ICP-MS, microthermometry on fluid inclusion, SIMS.

Title: REE-mineralization in pegmatites of the South Platte district in the Pikes Peak Batholith, Colorado (USA)

Abstract: This project aims to understand the Rare Earth Element (REE) mineralization processes of several pegmatites hosted in the northern part of the Pikes Peak Batholith, a typical anorogenic “A-type” subaluminous to peralkaline intrusion. These pegmatites show a concentric zonation with a border facies against the granite, a microcline-rich intermediate zone, and a quartz or quartz + microcline core with a REE-rich mineralization occurring as veins and pockets near the interface between the intermediate zone and the core of the pegmatite. Previous works suggested an REE-enrichment, trending toward more heavy-REE + Y (HREE) or more light-REE (LREE) enrichment between different pegmatite. However, these limited data remain overall not conclusive. The investigation will compare these pegmatites and their host rocks in greater petrological and geochemical detail and with state-of-the-art analytical methods in order to answer one fundamental questions: what are the processes, melt- or aqueous/carbonic fluid-related, that lead to the REE-enrichment in the batholith, and the concentration, transport, and precipitation of REE-rich phases in the pegmatite.

Hello Colleagues,
 
We are looking for an EPMA person to conduct the day-to-day care and running of the instrument.  I think it would be a good opportunity for a BS or possibly MS person.  In addition to doing probe work, the person will also perform FIB work.  We are specifically looking for someone with extensive probe knowledge, but are willing to train them to use the FIB if they are not familiar.  The person needs to be comfortable with working with radioactive materials.
