"Issues" with our IT Department
« on: April 02, 2014, 11:04:07 am »
A colleague wrote recently to me and noted:

"...As they are becoming more stringent on security on the network here, they have set up the computer with Windows automatic updates since the Win 7 update and my limited admin rights does not allow me to change this setting. Now before I fight this, I was wondering if you think this can be detrimental to the proper functioning of the software or the EPMA. I presumed an automatic update will not likely start during overnight operation of the instrument, but I would like to have your opinion on this. If there is ANY potential concern please let me know as this will help have this removed..."

My response is simple:

You *must* be able to set Windows Updates to "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them".  Otherwise it will re-boot in the middle of a run!

Make sure this is the option you have selected on all computers that need to run overnight uninterrupted!

Then when the run has completed I let windows install the updates ad re-start the computer...
The only stupid question is the one not asked!
