New 8230/8530 EIKS Functions
« on: July 05, 2013, 09:04:44 AM »
The latest version of the JEOL EIKS server and client software for the 8230/8530 now supports a number of instrument functions.

You will need the latest JEOL PC-SEM (v9) software which includes the lastest EIKS server software, the JEOL 2012 EIKS client software (also available on our ftp servers, contact Probe Software if you need help) and also the v. 1.6.0 (or later) JEOL driver also from Probe Software.

The new functions support set/get reflected and transmitted light, set/get beam size, set/get probe scan on off, set/get scan/spot mode, and set/get beam position.

To use the new EIKS functions set the [hardware] JEOLEIKSVersionNumber keyword in the PROBEWIN.INI file to 5.

John,

If it's not too much trouble, please could you list the functions that are available with:

[hardware] JEOLEIKSVersionNumber=3

[hardware] JEOLEIKSVersionNumber=4
as above +

[hardware] JEOLEIKSVersionNumber=5
as above +

Thanks,

Gareth

Good point- This is *not* documented! (I am sorry to say)

[hardware] JEOLEIKSVersionNumber=3
Read mag
Set mag
Read hv
Set hv

[hardware] JEOLEIKSVersionNumber=4
Read beam size
Set beam size
Read probe scan (on/off)
Set probe scan (on/off)

[hardware] JEOLEIKSVersionNumber=5
Calibrate beam current (read condenser lenses)
Set beam current (set condenser lenses)
Read "sampling mode" spot vs. scan
Set "sampling mode" spot vs. scan
Read beam deflection position
Set beam deflection position
Read optical light (reflected/transmitted
Set optical light (reflected/transmitted

Can someone please explain how one determines which version of Jeol PC-SEM one has, as here at ASU, where the Jeol engineer reinstalled the system software after there was a major software crash. So I look at the engineer's record of the software and see the following
PC-EPMA Software Ver. 1.9.0.3
PC-SEM Software Ver. 3. 0.1.6 (so is this version 3? or version 16? or v 6? I don't see any way to think is is at least version 8)
EOS-Firm Software  (JXA-8530F) Ver. 1.7.4.0
Stage Software Ver. 2. 85
EDS Software Ver.1.11

The new EIKS interface (2012 version) uses an INI file to configure the network interface.

Remember to copy those EIKS DLLs and the JEOLEiks.ini file from the PFE app folder to the Probe Image app folder and the Thermo NSS app folder so these apps can be run and connect to the instrument at the same time if you haven't already.

Edit by John: basically, the EIKS DLLs need to be in every app folder that uses the EIKS interface so they can run at the same time without conflict. So the EIKS client DLLs should be in the following folders:

C:\Probe Software\Probe for EPMA
C:\Program Files\Probe Software\Probe Image      <-- XP
C:\Program Files (x86)\Probe Software\Probe Image      <-- Win 7
C:\Program Files\Thermo Scientific\NSS                   <-- XP
C:\Program Files (x86)\Thermo Scientific\NSS                   <-- Win 7
C:\Windows\System32                                           <-- XP (for Remote and Matrix COM servers)
C:\Windows\SysWOW64                                        <-- Win 7 (for Remote and Matrix COM servers)

It's a little confusing because we put the Remote.exe (and Matrix.exe) in the System32 (or SysWOW64) folder and that is because it is a COM server and needs to be available for all apps.  But since Remote.exe needs to find the EIKS DLLs we have to put the EIKS DLLs in the system folder with it also.

No, not bad... but until you add the keyword to the [hardware] section and specify an EIKS version it will default to version 4 (2011) which does not include the latest EIKS functions in the 2012 release from JEOL.

Also make sure your JEOL PC software is up to date according to the documentation I sent you.

Remember, to utilize the latest EIKS column functions implemented by JEOL, your JEOL software on the JEOL PC should be version 10 (the PC-SEM, PC_SEM.exe, version will be 3.0.1.6 as seen from the JEOL help menu).
